CapabilityA demo, benchmark or paper shows the task can be done. Updates what the technology can do — not what employers will do.
Tasks this bears on
Cutting and styling
Cutting, shaping, blow-drying and styling hair by hand, adjusting to each head, hair type and client as the work goes.
Still human-led≈ Platform inference
Where this applies
A research system for robot hair care. It says hair care remains challenging for autonomous robots because of the fine-grained structure and complex dynamics of hair. Trained with a hair physics simulator, it performed goal-directed hair styling in simulation with 42% higher success than the previous best system, and real-world experiments showed zero-shot transfer to wigs. The authors frame it as making hair care accessible to people with limited mobility. Styling on wigs, not cutting or colouring clients' hair.
What this means
Robots are learning to style hair, so far in simulation and on wigs.
What it does not yet show
A research system tested on wigs; it does not show robots working on clients.
What you can check
Open arXiv 2510.06199 (DYMO-Hair) and find "zero-shot transferability of our system to wigs".
Does it change the assessment?
No — and this stage does not move it either. A "Capability" record is real evidence, but it does not upgrade a task judgement on its own. The 1 linked judgement above stand where they were.
