Dental hygienist — tasks, one by one

The unit of analysis is the task, not the job title. Each one below carries its direction, whether the judgement rests on evidence or on platform inference, the reasoning, and what it does not establish.

Every task on this page#

Cleaning and scaling

Still human-led≈ Platform inference

Removing plaque and tartar above and below the gum line with hand and ultrasonic instruments.

Robotics
Why

This is fine manual work in a living mouth, and no record on this page shows a machine doing it. The US statistics bureau lists removing tartar, stains and plaque among hygienists' duties and projects their employment to grow 8 percent from 2025 to 2035, without mentioning AI.

What this does NOT mean

The judgement rests on the absence of evidence about robots scaling teeth, not on a study showing they cannot; the projection counts jobs in one country.

Periodontal assessment and charting

Being augmented≈ Platform inference

Probing and recording pocket depths, bleeding and recession around each tooth.

AI / softwareRobotics
Why

AI is arriving from two sides, and neither is ready to take the probe away. A system that measures gum-to-bone distance from scans reports 0.040 mm error across 2,507 patients, but it needs a cone-beam CT. Voice systems that would free the second person who writes down the numbers matched whole phrases 36.7% to 52.5% of the time in a working clinic, and reached 67.40% overall accuracy in another study, with probing depth at 53.33%.

What this does NOT mean

Research systems in a few centres; none is shown in routine use, and the scan-based system depends on imaging most patients do not get.

Taking and screening X-rays

Being augmented✓ Evidence-backed

Taking bitewing and periapical X-rays and spotting what the dentist should look at.

AI / software
Why

Reading the film is where AI is cleared, and it is cleared as an aid. The FDA cleared software that marks suspected tartar on X-rays, stating it is not a replacement for a complete dentist's review, and software that measures bone levels to be used by trained professionals including dental hygienists but not in lieu of full patient evaluation. A deep-learning model detected periodontal bone loss at least as well as six dentists in a 2019 study.

What this does NOT mean

Clearances rest on the developers' own studies, and none measures how often hygienists use the tools.

Patient education

Still human-led✓ Evidence-backed

Showing patients how to brush and clean between teeth, and advising on diet and habits.

AI / software
Why

Models know the syllabus: on the March 2025 Japanese national dental hygienist examination the best model answered 85.0% of questions correctly, though the authors call for cautious integration. What changes a patient's habits is a person in the chair, and the UK regulator frames the hygienist's role around what they are trained and competent to do.

What this does NOT mean

An exam study and a scope document; neither measures whether AI advice changes what patients do.

Working within scope

Still human-led✓ Evidence-backed

Knowing which decisions belong to the dentist and which the hygienist may make.

RPA / self-service
Why

The rules draw the lines between people, not machines. California's code says the practice of dental hygiene does not include diagnosis and comprehensive treatment planning, and the UK regulator says registrants must only perform tasks for which they are trained, competent and indemnified, including prescribing and interpreting radiographs within scope.

What this does NOT mean

One US state and one UK regulator; scope differs widely between places, and neither rule mentions AI.
