Massage therapist
Assesses clients and treats them by hand — relaxation and sports massage in spas and gyms, and therapeutic work on pain and injury alongside other clinicians. Robot massage has reached the relaxation end: a luxury hotel spa now offers a fully self-guided robotic massage. The clinical evidence is early: a systematic review found 17 studies of massage robots, only one of them a randomised trial, and describes robots as an adjunct; in one trial a robot added to standard physiotherapy for low back pain did at least as well as the control treatment. Assessment, clinical judgement and treating injured people stay with the therapist, and the US projects massage therapist jobs to grow 15 percent to 2035, without mentioning robots.

This is not a probability of losing your job. It combines how much of the role's task load is exposed to automation with how far adoption has actually gone — useful for comparing occupations on one consistent basis, and for nothing else.
Written for massage therapists who work in spas, gyms, clinics and on their own. Physiotherapists have their own page. The evidence is a US labour projection, a hotel spa's announcement of a robotic massage service, a systematic review of massage robots and a randomised trial of a massage robot for low back pain; it establishes where robot massage is offered and how strong its evidence is, not how massage therapists' numbers or incomes have changed.
What is actually changing#
The unit of analysis is the task, not the job title. A role is not replaced — its task mix shifts.
Each tile is one task. Its size is how much of the job it is; its colour is where the task is heading. Click a tile to see what the judgement does not establish.
One venue's announcement; it does not show how many sessions robots now give or whether the service lasts, and says nothing about the spa's therapists.
Early studies, mostly small; the trial added the robot to standard care rather than comparing it with a massage therapist.
The absence of a record and a projection for one country; it does not measure how assessment is done in practice.
The absence of a record is not evidence that note-taking tools are unused; it does not measure how much time therapists spend on records or whether booking and note software has changed that.

United States. The statistics bureau projects employment of massage therapists to grow 15 percent from 2025 to 2035, from 155,400 to 179,100, much faster than the average for all occupations, with about 20,400 openings a year. The page does not mention robots or automation.
A named person with standing publicly predicted something, on a date, in an attributable statement. It is recorded so that who said what, and when, stays checkable — and it never moves a task's assessment, because a prediction is not an observation. Its value arrives later: the record sits on the same page as the evidence about that occupation, so anyone reading the forecast reads the record of what happened next beside it. That is the reckoning; this site publishes no verdict on whether a forecast came true.
Baltimore, United States. The hotel's spa announced a partnership with a lifestyle robotics company to introduce a robotic massage for hotel guests and locals, the first in the city, saying the experience is fully self-guided and guests tailor the session to their preferences. The release quotes both the spa director and the robot company's chief executive. One venue's account; it gives no figures on use or on the spa's therapists.
An employer has put it into production. Can move the baseline — weighted by scale and how similar the setting is.
A systematic review of robot-assisted massage in healthcare, searching databases up to March 2023. Seventeen studies met the criteria: 15 preliminary trials, one quasi-experimental study and one randomised controlled trial; nearly half were preclinical trials on healthy volunteers. All reported benefits, and the authors conclude that robot-assisted massage may be integrated into care as an adjunct, with further research needed. The authors declared no conflicts of interest.

A single-blinded randomised controlled trial in La Rioja, Spain, with 44 patients with non-specific low back pain. The authors note that manual pressure release is effective but hard to standardise and that therapists suffer musculoskeletal problems from the repetitive work. A therapeutic massage robot was added to the current protocol of non-drug measures; disability scores fell significantly in the robot arm, and the authors conclude the robot is at least as efficient as the control treatment. It did not compare the robot with a massage therapist, and the authors declared no conflict of interest.

What this means for you#
If you are starting out, expect some routine relaxation sessions to be offered by machines in high-end spas and gyms, and build what they do not do: assessment, clinical work on pain and injury, and adjusting to the person in front of you.
Expect robots to compete at the routine end of spa work. Clinical massage, treatment planning and the trust of regular clients stay with you.
Your options#
Four directions, each with its real constraints and one thing you can test this week. Continuing as you are is a legitimate choice — it just has to be a chosen one.
Move towards clinical and sports massage
Robots are being sold for routine relaxation sessions, while clinical evidence for them is early and treats them as an adjunct.
Clinical work often needs further training and, in some places, a different registration.
List which of your sessions last month were routine relaxation and which involved assessment or treating pain.
Stay in hands-on practice
No record shows machines doing assessment or clinical treatment, and the US projects the occupation to grow much faster than average.
The work is physically demanding and income depends on keeping regular clients.
Find out whether any spa or gym near you has installed a massage robot and what it charges compared with your sessions.
Move into rehabilitation settings
Where robots appear in clinical care, they are added to treatment planned and supervised by clinicians.
It may require working under physiotherapists or doctors and further qualifications.
Look up what clinics or rehabilitation centres near you require from massage therapists.
Common questions#
Not on present evidence. A luxury hotel spa offers a self-guided robotic massage and robots are being sold for routine sessions, but the clinical evidence is early and treats robots as an adjunct, assessment and clinical work stay with therapists, and the US projects the occupation to grow 15 percent from 2025 to 2035.
We do not answer that with a number of years. Watch whether robot massage spreads beyond high-end spas and gyms, and whether it moves into clinical treatment. Those tell you more than any date.
The evidence is too early to say. A systematic review found only one randomised trial among 17 studies, and in a low back pain trial a robot added to standard care did at least as well as the control treatment — not compared with a therapist.
In some hotel spas and gyms: for example, a Four Seasons hotel spa in Baltimore announced a fully self-guided robotic massage.
What these judgements rest on#
1 of 4 task judgements on this page are backed by a verified event and 3 are platform inference, each labelled where it appears. Behind them sit 2 technology dimensions, a reconstructed trajectory since language models reached the public, and 4 verified events.

Other roles in the same function#
A company divides its work into functions before it divides it into jobs. These sit in Core delivery (industry-specific) alongside this one — a fact about org charts, not a judgement that they are similar or that they are changing in the same direction.
