Photographer
Makes photographs that people pay for — product and campaign images, portraits and events, news pictures and stock — and edits, retouches and licenses them. Retailers now generate most of their marketing imagery with AI, and US projections expect stock photography in particular to be partly replaced by AI-generated images; but news organisations forbid generative changes to photographs, photo contests exclude generated images, and portraits and events still need someone in the room.
List your last ten paid jobs and mark which could have been replaced by a generated image and which could not.
This is not a probability of losing your job. It combines how much of the role's task load is exposed to automation with how far adoption has actually gone — useful for comparing occupations on one consistent basis, and for nothing else.
Written for professional photographers — commercial and product, fashion and campaign, portrait and event, stock, and news. Graphic designers, content creators, video editors and journalists have their own pages. The evidence is a US labour projection, a large retailer's own account of its AI content production, a stock agency's annual report, a news agency's standards, a photo contest's rules and a US copyright report; it establishes where generated images are in use and what rules keep for real photographs, not how photographers' incomes have changed.
What is actually changing#
The unit of analysis is the task, not the job title. A role is not replaced — its task mix shifts.
Each tile is one task. Its size is how much of the job it is; its colour is where the task is heading. Click a tile to see what the judgement does not establish.
One retailer's own account; marketing imagery is not the product photographs on its pages, and nothing here counts photographers' commissions across the market.
A projection and a stock agency's annual report; neither measures contributors' income.
A projection's reasoning; nothing here measures bookings or prices for portrait and event work.
A news agency's own standard and a contest's rules; they do not measure how many news photographers are employed.
No primary source here measures how much retouching software now does; the rules cover news and contest work only.
US guidance, not a statute; other countries differ, and it does not measure licensing income.

United States. The statistics bureau projects that employment of photographers will decline 1 percent from 2025 to 2035, from 145,000 to 144,000, with about 10,700 openings a year. It says some kinds of photography, such as stock photos, are projected to be partially replaced by artificial intelligence-generated images, dampening demand, while employment of self-employed photographers is projected to grow and demand for portrait photographers will remain. It counts jobs for one country, not tasks.
A named person with standing publicly predicted something, on a date, in an attributable statement. It is recorded so that who said what, and when, stays checkable — and it never moves a task's assessment, because a prediction is not an observation. Its value arrives later: the record sits on the same page as the evidence about that occupation, so anyone reading the forecast reads the record of what happened next beside it. That is the reckoning; this site publishes no verdict on whether a forecast came true.
Zalando, a European fashion retailer. The company says that 90% of its on-site marketing content is now generated by AI, that a single production cycle could previously take six to eight weeks, and that it has produced 170,000 AI-generated videos based on its existing product photography. It is the company describing its own operations; the figure covers marketing content, not product-page photographs, which still start from real photography.
An employer has put it into production. Can move the baseline — weighted by scale and how similar the setting is.
United States, a stock agency. The annual report says the company has seen increased demand for access to its metadata for machine learning and generative AI model training, reports revenue from data, distribution and services rising year on year, and says it faces increasing competition from companies offering generative and agentic AI solutions, including prompt-based creation and editing. It is the agency describing its own business, which both licenses content for AI training and sells AI-generated images.

Zalando. The company says AI-driven content production has scaled, with approximately 70% of editorial campaign assets AI-generated in the fourth quarter of 2024, that pairing digital models with high-quality product photoshoots gives a precise representation of each garment, and that human involvement remains a key part of the process, from model scans to creative direction. It is the company describing its own operations.

United States. The report concludes that, given current generally available technology, prompts alone do not provide sufficient human control to make users of an AI system the authors of the output, and that copyright does not extend to purely AI-generated material or material where there is insufficient human control over the expressive elements. It is guidance from the Copyright Office, not a statute or court ruling, and it governs rights, not how photographs are made.

An international photojournalism contest. Its entry rules say no synthetic or artificially generated images are allowed and no use of artificially generative fill is allowed in post-production; the foundation announced the rule change in a news post updated 20 November 2023. The entry-rules page itself carries no date. It governs contest entries, not newsroom practice or employment.

A global news agency's standards. It says that, in accordance with its standards, it does not alter any elements of its photos, video or audio, and therefore does not allow the use of generative AI to add or subtract any elements, and that it will refrain from transmitting AI-generated images suspected or proven to be false depictions of reality. It is one organisation's policy; the agency also has a licensing agreement with an AI company, which the page discloses.

What this means for you#
If you are starting out, expect generated imagery to take much of the stock and campaign market at large companies, and look to the work that has to be real: people, events, news and documentary, and shoots that feed products customers will actually receive.
Expect fewer large campaign shoots where brands generate images, and more demand for the photographs and direction that generation depends on — the real product shots, the models, the creative direction. Your rights in your own images are protected in a way generated images are not.
Your options#
Four directions, each with its real constraints and one thing you can test this week. Continuing as you are is a legitimate choice — it just has to be a chosen one.
Stay, and focus on work that has to be real
Portraits, events and news need someone there, and news organisations and contests exclude generated images.
These markets are local and often lower-paid than large campaign work.

Move towards directing and supplying generated imagery
Retailers generating their imagery still need real product shoots, model scans and creative direction to feed it.
Fewer such roles exist than traditional shoots, and they need new technical skills.
Ask a brand or agency you work with which parts of their image production they now generate, and what they still shoot.
Move into video or visual journalism
News and documentary work is where rules protect real images most firmly.
Newsroom jobs are few and competitive.

Common questions#
In parts of the market it already competes. A large retailer says 90% of its on-site marketing content is AI-generated, and US projections expect stock photography to be partly replaced by AI images. But portraits and events still need someone there, news organisations and photo contests exclude generated images, and US projections expect overall photographer employment to fall only 1 percent from 2025 to 2035.
We do not answer that with a number of years. Watch which markets accept generated images: stock and marketing already do at large companies; news and photo contests explicitly do not. Where your work sits between those two tells you more than any date.
In the US, not when they are purely AI-generated. The Copyright Office concludes that prompts alone do not give enough human control to make the user the author, while a photographer's own images remain protected.
US projections expect photographer employment to decline 1 percent from 2025 to 2035, with about 10,700 openings a year, stock photography under pressure from AI images and portrait demand holding. The safest work is the work that has to be real.
What these judgements rest on#
5 of 6 task judgements on this page are backed by a verified event and 1 are platform inference, each labelled where it appears. Behind them sit 3 technology dimensions, a reconstructed trajectory since language models reached the public, and 7 verified events.

A company divides its work into functions before it divides it into jobs. These sit in Marketing & content alongside this one — a fact about org charts, not a judgement that they are similar or that they are changing in the same direction.
