Evidence stage
PilotSmall-scale trial in a real setting. Tells us the deployment conditions are being tested, not that they hold — so one pilot is never enough on its own; two independent ones are.
Tasks this bears on
Laying brick and block walls
Spreading mortar and laying units to line and level, course after course, on long straight runs and around openings.
Being augmented✓ Evidence-backed
Cutting, pointing and detail
Cutting units to fit, finishing and raking out joints, and building corners, arches and details.
Still human-led≈ Platform inference
Moving bricks, blocks and mortar
Lifting and moving heavy units and mortar around the site and up to the working level.
Being augmented≈ Platform inference
Where this applies
Wormerveer, the Netherlands. After visiting a start-up developing a bricklaying robot, the builder's managers say the robot can already do the bulk work, the long runs, but is limited to 6 metres in height and not yet at the speed of hand work, and that the real craft work stays with tradespeople. The builder plans a pilot in which the robot lays all the brickwork of 8 of 60 houses, together with a bricklayer who fills the mortar, rakes out the joints, restocks bricks and brings the robot inside if it rains; two self-driving carts bring mortar and bricks. A planned pilot described by the builder; no results are reported.
What this means
Where robots lay brick, builders still plan for a bricklayer beside them doing the joints and the supplies.
What it does not yet show
A planned pilot with no reported results.
What you can check
Open Heembouw's story 'Metselen met robots' (30 August 2024) and find "acht van de in totaal 60".
Does it change the assessment?
No. The impact index is never moved by a single event. Of the 3 linked judgements above, 0 moved from inference to evidence with this record; the other 1 already rested on earlier evidence.
