Driving instructor

Teaches people to drive: basic control on a training ground, driving in real traffic from the passenger seat with dual controls, theory and hazard awareness, and getting a pupil ready for the test. On closed training grounds this is where automation is furthest along — two Chinese regional transport authorities are piloting in-car AI teaching devices that take over part or all of the instructor's in-car guidance. On public roads the rules keep the person in the car: China caps simulator teaching at 6 hours, research finds simulator gains do not always carry over to real roads without real practice, and the UK test bans self-parking and Tesla Autopilot. New car technology also adds teaching: the EU now requires theory tests to cover driver assistance and automated driving systems.

Automation impact indexLow confidence

This is not a probability of losing your job. It combines how much of the role's task load is exposed to automation with how far adoption has actually gone — useful for comparing occupations on one consistent basis, and for nothing else.

Where this applies

Written for instructors who teach learner drivers of cars, in driving schools or on their own. Truck, bus and ride-hail drivers have their own pages. The evidence is two regional pilots of AI teaching equipment in China, China's national training syllabus, the EU's driving licence directive, the UK driving test agency's rules for test cars and a systematic review of novice-driver education; it establishes where rules and pilots put automated teaching and where they keep a person, not how instructor numbers or incomes have changed.

Theory tests must ask about the advantages, limitations and risks of driver assistance and automated driving systems, under the EU's 2025 driving licence directive

European Union. The new driving licence directive says questions shall be asked on each listed topic in the theory test, including the advantages, limitations and risks associated with advanced driver assistance systems and automated driving systems, their safe use and how they can affect the driver's awareness and behaviour. It also lets hazard-reaction skills in the practical test be tested on simulators instead. Member states must write it into national law; it adds material to teach rather than removing the test.

Regulation, subsidy or public procurement is requiring or funding adoption — the mirror of a constraint. It shows adoption is being required, not that it has happened, so one mandate is never enough on its own; two independent ones are.

Simulators and computer-based training improved novice drivers' hazard anticipation, but the gains do not always carry over to real roads without real practice, a review of 29 studies found

A systematic review of 29 peer-reviewed US studies of teen driver education from 2000 to 2024. It finds that technology-enhanced programmes such as computer-based hazard training and simulators enhanced skills like hazard anticipation and attention management, but that simulator improvements do not always translate into long-term reductions in real-world crash risk unless supplemented with continued training or real-life practice. It covers only US studies and is a preprint.

A demo, benchmark or paper shows the task can be done. Updates what the technology can do — not what employers will do.

Self-parking and Tesla Autopilot cannot be used in the driving test, while cruise control, parking sensors and lane assist can, Britain's driving test agency told instructors

Great Britain. The driving test agency's bulletin says its updated guidance clarifies that cruise control (including adaptive), speed limiters, parking sensors and cameras, lane assist, blind spot monitoring and traffic sign recognition can be used during the driving test if fitted, but that self-parking and Tesla Autopilot cannot. It says the rules also apply to the cars driving instructors provide for a test. The test still assesses the pupil doing the manoeuvres.

Failure, rollback, regulation or cost is suppressing adoption. Can lower an assessment or widen its uncertainty.

Pilot driving schools may use in-car AI teaching equipment that takes over part or all of the instructor's guidance on closed training grounds, Shanghai's transport commission said

Shanghai. The transport commission's pilot notice defines in-car intelligent teaching equipment, used for the basic and training-ground part of the national syllabus, that partly or fully takes the place of the instructor's in-car guidance. Pupils may drive such cars alone on a separate, closed training ground; the school must keep safety monitors with instructor qualifications at a live monitoring centre and on-site instructors equal to 20% of the equipped cars, at least 2. Each equipped car adds one unit to the school's approved training capacity. Only schools with at least 50 training cars and the top quality rating may apply; the pilot runs to 30 June 2026 and the notice reports no results.

Intelligent robot coach cars and motion simulators are being piloted in selected driving schools from 2023 to 2025, Guangdong's provincial transport department said

Guangdong, China. The provincial transport department launched a pilot, running from January 2023 to December 2025, of motion driving simulators and intelligent robot coach cars. The robot coach cars must deliver AI teaching for every item in the basic and training-ground part of the national syllabus, and may be used only on an enclosed ground of at least 5,000 square metres, not mixed with ordinary training cars. No more than 3 schools per city in the Pearl River Delta and 2 elsewhere may take part, in principle. The department says it will propose rules on training-hour recognition and the ratio of people to cars after the pilot; the notice reports no results.

Simulator teaching may count for no more than 6 hours of driver training, China's national syllabus says, which also adds driver-assistance features to what is taught

China. The national driver training and testing syllabus, issued by the transport and public security ministries and in force from 1 April 2022, allows driving simulators for teaching but says simulator teaching hours may not exceed 6. It encourages combining classroom and online teaching, and adds understanding driver-assistance devices and using driver-assistance functions to the teaching content. The rest of the practical hours are taught in real cars.

Failure, rollback, regulation or cost is suppressing adoption. Can lower an assessment or widen its uncertainty.

What it means for you

What this means for you#

If you are starting out

If you are starting out, expect basic manoeuvres on training grounds to be the first part handed to equipment where regulators allow it, and build what stays with you: judgement in real traffic, reading a nervous pupil, and teaching how driver-assistance features really behave.

If you are experienced

Expect more of the early hours to be done on simulators or equipped cars, and more of your lessons to include driver-assistance systems. Deciding when a pupil is safe on the road stays with you.

Your options#

Four directions, each with its real constraints and one thing you can test this week. Continuing as you are is a legitimate choice — it just has to be a chosen one.

Stay and strengthen

Stay in on-road teaching

Every rule found keeps a person in the car on public roads, and simulator gains do not always carry over without real practice.

Real constraints

Pilots show pressure on training-ground hours, which can mean fewer hours per pupil overall.

Test this week

Check whether your local regulator or driving schools near you run simulator or AI-car pilots, and which part of training they cover.

Reshape the role

Teach driver-assistance systems properly

The EU now requires theory tests to cover driver assistance and automated driving, and China's syllabus adds driver-assistance features to what must be taught.

Real constraints

Features differ between car models, and the test may forbid some of them.

Test this week

List the driver-assistance features in your lesson car and write down, for each, one situation where it stops working.

Adjacent move

Move into supervising automated training or into advanced and fleet training

Pilots with AI teaching equipment still require qualified instructors as safety monitors and on-site guides.

Real constraints

Such roles exist only where regulators run pilots, and there are fewer of them than in-car instructor posts.

Test this week

Read the staffing rules in one AI-training pilot notice and note which roles need an instructor qualification.

Common questions#

Will AI replace driving instructors?

Not on public roads, on present evidence. Two Chinese regional pilots let in-car AI equipment take over part or all of the instructor's guidance on closed training grounds, but China caps simulator teaching at 6 hours, research finds real practice is still needed, and test rules still assess a person driving. New car technology also adds to what instructors must teach.

How long do I have before this job disappears?

We do not answer that with a number of years. Watch whether regulators where you work let equipment count for training hours, and whether that moves beyond the training ground. Those tell you more than any date.

Can I learn to drive with a simulator or an AI coach?

For part of it. China counts at most 6 hours of simulator teaching, some Chinese pilots use AI coach cars on closed training grounds, and research finds simulators help with skills such as hazard anticipation — but real practice on the road is still needed.

Will self-driving cars mean nobody needs driving lessons?

Not under current rules. The EU's new directive adds driver assistance and automated driving systems to the theory test rather than removing the test, and the UK test does not allow self-parking or Tesla Autopilot.
