Massage therapist — tasks, one by one

The unit of analysis is the task, not the job title. Each one below carries its direction, whether the judgement rests on evidence or on platform inference, the reasoning, and what it does not establish.

Relaxation and wellness massage

Automating✓ Evidence-backed

Standard relaxation sessions in spas, hotels and gyms, where the client wants a routine massage rather than treatment.

Robotics
Why

This is where robots are being sold. A luxury hotel spa announced a robotic massage that is fully self-guided, with guests tailoring the session to their preferences. It covers the routine end of the work.

What this does NOT mean

One venue's announcement; it does not show how many sessions robots now give or whether the service lasts, and says nothing about the spa's therapists.

Therapeutic and clinical massage

Still human-led≈ Platform inference

Treating pain, injury and tension by hand, adjusting pressure and technique to what the tissue and the client tell you.

RoboticsAI / software
Why

The clinical evidence for robots is early and frames them as a helper. A systematic review found 17 studies of robot-assisted massage in healthcare, 15 of them preliminary trials and only one randomised controlled trial, and says robotic massage may be integrated as an adjunct. In a randomised trial with 44 patients, a massage robot added to standard non-drug care for low back pain was at least as efficient as the control treatment.

What this does NOT mean

Early studies, mostly small; the trial added the robot to standard care rather than comparing it with a massage therapist.

Assessment and treatment planning

Still human-led≈ Platform inference

Taking a history, spotting reasons not to massage, planning treatment and knowing when to refer someone on.

AI / software
Why

No record found shows machines doing this. The US statistics bureau projects massage therapist employment to grow 15 percent from 2025 to 2035, much faster than average, without mentioning robots or automation.

What this does NOT mean

The absence of a record and a projection for one country; it does not measure how assessment is done in practice.

Client records and aftercare advice

Still human-led≈ Platform inference

Writing up what was done and why, and showing clients stretches and self-care to keep the benefit between sessions.

AI / software
Why

No record found shows software or robots taking over client notes or aftercare advice for massage therapists. The robot massage services and trials found deliver the massage itself, not the advice that follows it.

What this does NOT mean

The absence of a record is not evidence that note-taking tools are unused; it does not measure how much time therapists spend on records or whether booking and note software has changed that.
