Evidence stage
PilotSmall-scale trial in a real setting. Tells us the deployment conditions are being tested, not that they hold — so one pilot is never enough on its own; two independent ones are.
Tasks this bears on
Managing swallowing problems
Assessing swallowing at the bedside or with imaging, choosing safe food textures and teaching swallowing techniques.
Being augmented≈ Platform inference
Where this applies
Austria, a secondary care hospital. A machine-learning tool integrated in the hospital information system predicted dysphagia risk from diagnoses, laboratory values and medication and sorted patients into three risk groups; sensitivity was 74.2 percent for internal medicine patients and 44.4 percent for geriatric patients. It flags patients for referral; it does not assess swallowing.
What this means
A model can help decide who should be referred for a swallowing assessment, but it misses many patients and does not do the assessment.
What it does not yet show
One hospital's model; it does not show changes in therapists' swallowing work.
What you can check
Open PubMed 36625964 (Dysphagia, 2023) and find "sensitivity 44.4%".
Does it change the assessment?
No. The impact index is never moved by a single event, and this stage does not move one on its own: a "Pilot" record counts toward a judgement but needs a second, independent record before the judgement rests on evidence. This one is counted; on its own it changed nothing.
