Evidence stage
CapabilityA demo, benchmark or paper shows the task can be done. Updates what the technology can do — not what employers will do.
Tasks this bears on
Drawing blood
Finding a vein, inserting the needle and filling the tubes in the right order, or taking a fingerstick sample.
Being augmented≈ Platform inference
Caring for patients during the draw
Calming anxious patients and children, handling difficult veins and responding when someone feels faint.
Still human-led≈ Platform inference
Where this applies
United States. The regulator granted De Novo classification for a device intended to perform autonomous, ultrasound-guided venipuncture and blood collection for diagnostic purposes in adult outpatients, monitored by a trained phlebotomist; one phlebotomist may supervise up to three devices at once. Its labelling must state the expected rate of referral to manual phlebotomy, and its testing must include subgroups such as skin tone and difficult venous access. A marketing authorisation, not evidence of use.
What this means
A robot may now draw blood from adult outpatients by itself, but the regulator keeps a trained phlebotomist watching over it.
What it does not yet show
An authorisation for one device in one country; it does not show any clinic using it.
What you can check
Open FDA De Novo DEN250046 and find "monitored by a trained phlebotomist".
Does it change the assessment?
No — and this stage does not move it either. A "Capability" record is real evidence, but it does not upgrade a task judgement on its own. The 2 linked judgements above stand where they were.
