Drafter / CAD technician — tasks, one by one

The unit of analysis is the task, not the job title. Each one below carries its direction, whether the judgement rests on evidence or on platform inference, the reasoning, and what it does not establish.

Producing drawings from designs

Being augmented✓ Evidence-backed

Turning engineers' and architects' designs and sketches into dimensioned drawings that others can build or manufacture from.

AI / software
Why

Drawings are increasingly exported from models rather than drawn: a Japanese contractor submits model-exported drawings for permits, while still marking in green the 2D additions the model did not produce. The US statistics bureau says CAD and BIM let engineers and architects do many tasks drafters used to do, which moves work to them rather than to a machine.

What this does NOT mean

One contractor's account and a projection that does not separate AI from earlier software; it does not show how much drawing time models save.

Building and maintaining models

Being augmented✓ Evidence-backed

Building 3D and BIM models with the data that drawings, schedules and permit checks are taken from.

AI / software
Why

Permit systems now ask for models: Singapore's system has consultants produce one coordinated building model for approval instead of separate versions of plans, and makes it mandatory for new projects of 5,000 square metres or more from October 2026; Japan plans to review model data itself from 2029. That makes the model the deliverable, which is work for people who build models.

What this does NOT mean

Two governments' systems and plans; they do not show who builds the models in practice or how many drafters do it.

Checking drawings against codes and standards

Being augmented≈ Platform inference

Checking drawings for consistency, dimensions, symbols and compliance with codes and drawing standards before they go out.

AI / software
Why

Regulators are building automated checks on the model side: Japan plans AI- and program-assisted review of model data. Reading drawings themselves is still unreliable for AI: a 2026 benchmark found multimodal models brittle on mechanical drawings, missing decisive cues.

What this does NOT mean

A government plan and one benchmark; they do not measure checking done in drawing offices today.

Revisions and coordination

Still human-led✓ Evidence-backed

Updating drawings and models as designs change, resolving clashes between disciplines and tracking what changed.

AI / software
Why

No record found shows AI handling revisions and coordination. The contractor submitting model-exported drawings describes extra preparation and markup work, and says mechanical and electrical drawings, which are numerous, are being brought in gradually.

What this does NOT mean

The absence of a record and one contractor's account; it does not measure how much revision work there is.
