Evidence stage
PilotSmall-scale trial in a real setting. Tells us the deployment conditions are being tested, not that they hold — so one pilot is never enough on its own; two independent ones are.
Tasks this bears on
Taking histories and writing notes
Taking the patient's history during the visit and documenting the encounter in the record.
Being augmented✓ Evidence-backed
Where this applies
University of Iowa Health Care, United States. A pre-post observational study in which 38 volunteer physicians and advanced practice providers used a commercial ambient AI tool for five weeks in ambulatory clinics; the tool transcribed patient–clinician conversations and generated preliminary notes for review and entry into the record. Burnout rates fell from 69% to 43%; work exhaustion did not change significantly. The abstract does not say how many participants were nurse practitioners, and there was no control group.
What this means
AI-drafted visit notes lowered reported burnout among clinicians who included advanced practice providers, with the clinician still reviewing each note.
What it does not yet show
A small pilot without a control group; it does not separate nurse practitioners or measure time saved.
What you can check
Ask whether your clinic is piloting an ambient AI note tool and how its notes are reviewed.
Does it change the assessment?
No. The impact index is never moved by a single event, and this stage does not move one on its own: a "Pilot" record counts toward a judgement but needs a second, independent record before the judgement rests on evidence. This one is counted; on its own it changed nothing.
