Japan Airlines ends face-to-face onboard sales on domestic flights from 1 March 2026, moving them to passengers ordering over in-flight Wi-Fi

Evidence stage
DeploymentAn employer has put it into production. Can move the baseline — weighted by scale and how similar the setting is.
Tasks this bears on
Onboard sales and flight paperwork
Selling duty-free and onboard items, handling payments, counting stock and filing the post-flight reports.
Automating✓ Evidence-backed
Where this applies
Japan, one airline group. The release says that from 1 March 2026 the JAL group replaces conventional face-to-face onboard sales on domestic flights with its digital service, in which passengers create an account over in-flight Wi-Fi and can buy for three days after the flight, with delivery anywhere in Japan; on international flights face-to-face sales continue and the digital option is added, and duty-free goods are excluded. It says the move to digital sales lets the airline optimise the amount of sale goods carried on board. It does not mention crew workload or post-flight paperwork. Dated by the release (20 February 2026), not the date the change took effect.
What this means
On one large airline's domestic network, selling goods in the aisle is no longer cabin-crew work: passengers order on their own devices and the goods are delivered after the flight.
What it does not yet show
One airline, domestic flights only; international face-to-face sales continue, and it says nothing about stock counts, post-flight reports or crew numbers.
What you can check
Open Japan Airlines press release No. 25112 (20 February 2026) and find 「国内線はデジタルによる「おうちで機内販売」へ一本化します」.
Does it change the assessment?
No. The impact index is never moved by a single event. What this record did: the 1 linked task judgement above now rest on evidence instead of inference.
