Evidence stage
ConstraintFailure, rollback, regulation or cost is suppressing adoption. Can lower an assessment or widen its uncertainty.
Tasks this bears on
Designing surveys, samples and trials
Deciding who to sample, how many, how to ask and how to analyse, and writing the analysis plan before data arrive.
Still human-led✓ Evidence-backed
Statistical analysis and modelling
Estimating, modelling and testing, and judging what the data can and cannot support.
Being augmented✓ Evidence-backed
Where this applies
European Union. The reflection paper says that when AI or machine-learning models are used for transformation, analysis or interpretation of data within a clinical trial, they are part of the statistical analysis and should follow applicable guidelines on statistical principles; in pivotal trials the data pipeline and models should be pre-specified, frozen and documented in the statistical analysis plan, incremental learning approaches are not accepted, and any change during the trial requires a regulatory interaction to amend the plan. A reflection paper, not legally binding; it binds the sponsor, not a named person.
What this means
In medicines trials, an AI analysis is held to the same rules as any statistical analysis and must be fixed in advance.
What it does not yet show
A reflection paper for one region; it governs how, not how much, AI is used.
What you can check
Open EMA's reflection paper on AI in the medicinal product lifecycle (9 September 2024) and find "considered a part of the statistical analysis".
Does it change the assessment?
No. The impact index is never moved by a single event. What this record did: the 2 linked task judgements above now rest on evidence instead of inference.
