Evidence stage
DeploymentAn employer has put it into production. Can move the baseline — weighted by scale and how similar the setting is.
Tasks this bears on
Reading ECGs and assessing patients
Recording and interpreting a 12-lead ECG, recognising a heart attack or stroke, and deciding where the patient needs to go.
Being augmented✓ Evidence-backed
Where this applies
Sacramento County, California, binding protocol for advanced life support crews. It says 12-lead ECG computer interpretations reading "Acute MI", "Acute MI Suspected", "ST Elevation Criteria Met" or "STEMI" are accepted as consistent with acute myocardial infarction; that all 12-lead ECGs consistent with an acute STEMI shall be transmitted to the STEMI receiving facility, with the reason documented if not; and that ECGs may be transmitted to a base hospital for a consult on interpretation. The paramedic still decides when to record an ECG and repeats it when the patient changes. Effective 1 November 2024; the document lists 1 June 2026 as its next review date.
What this means
In at least one US county, the device's own reading is enough to treat an ECG as a heart attack for routing; the paramedic records, transmits and keeps treating.
What it does not yet show
One county's protocol; it says nothing about how often the computer reading is wrong, and the document was due for review in June 2026, so a later version may differ.
What you can check
Open Sacramento County EMS Program Document 8827.13 (12-Lead ECG) and find "are accepted as consistent with acute myocardial infarction".
Does it change the assessment?
No. The impact index is never moved by a single event. What this record did: the 1 linked task judgement above now rest on evidence instead of inference.
