Tasks this bears on
Hands-on care
Medication, wounds, lines, moving and washing patients, and everything that involves touching a frightened person.
Still human-led✓ Evidence-backed
Where this applies
California, United States. The statute requires the state health department to set minimum, specific and numerical licensed nurse-to-patient ratios by nurse classification and hospital unit, says these ratios are the minimum number of registered and licensed nurses that shall be allocated, and that additional staff shall be assigned according to a patient classification system that includes the need for specialised equipment and technology and the complexity of clinical judgement needed. Read as amended effective 30 June 2025. The ratios themselves sit in regulation; it predates AI and does not mention machines replacing care.
What this means
In California, technology at the bedside is a reason to add nurses, not to staff below a legal floor.
What it does not yet show
The ratios are set elsewhere in regulation, and the law predates AI.
What you can check
Open California Health and Safety Code section 1276.4 and find "the need for specialized equipment and technology".
Does it change the assessment?
No. The impact index is never moved by a single event. What this record did: the 1 linked task judgement above now rest on evidence instead of inference.
