What this means
The number that travels — over 11,000 branches closed in a year — is not a story about counters being automated. The regulator own register shows rural credit cooperatives, village banks and rural cooperative banks accounting for more branch losses than the entire net decline, which means the closures are mostly institutional restructuring. Meanwhile more than 8,400 new branches were approved, so the network is being moved, not withdrawn.

It does not show that teller work is safe. Restructuring and digitisation can move the same jobs in the same direction for different reasons, and this count says nothing about staffing per branch — a branch that stays open with three counters instead of six does not appear anywhere in these figures.
