In 2025 over 11,000 Chinese bank branches were approved to close and over 8,400 to open, a net fall of about 2,000 — but rural credit cooperatives and village banks account for more than all of it

Where this applies
Mainland China, counted from the regulator\s own financial-licence register. The net fall is dominated by consolidation rather than digitisation: rural credit cooperatives shed about 2,200 branches, village banks nearly 1,000 and rural cooperative banks nearly 100, driven by provincial rural-bank restructuring and the merger of small institutions. More than 8,400 new branches were still approved in the same year, so the branch network is being redistributed, not simply shrunk.
What this means
The number that travels — over 11,000 branches closed in a year — is not a story about counters being automated. The regulator own register shows rural credit cooperatives, village banks and rural cooperative banks accounting for more branch losses than the entire net decline, which means the closures are mostly institutional restructuring. Meanwhile more than 8,400 new branches were approved, so the network is being moved, not withdrawn.
What it does not yet show
It does not show that teller work is safe. Restructuring and digitisation can move the same jobs in the same direction for different reasons, and this count says nothing about staffing per branch — a branch that stays open with three counters instead of six does not appear anywhere in these figures.
What you can check
Count the staffed counters actually open at your own branch at the busiest hour this month, and ask how many the branch is establishment-rated for. Branch counts are a national aggregate; counters open at peak is the number that decides whether the job exists where you work.
Does it change the assessment?
No. The impact index is never moved by a single event. Nor did this record change a layer: all 1 linked judgement above already rested on earlier evidence. This one adds to them.
