Evidence stage
DeploymentAn employer has put it into production. Can move the baseline — weighted by scale and how similar the setting is.
Tasks this bears on
Highway driving
The long, structurally simple middle of a trip — controlled access, predictable lanes, no pedestrians.
Automating✓ Evidence-backed
Where this applies
US middle-mile freight between distribution centres, warehouses and stores in three states — not long-haul, not unmapped routes, not the last mile. PepsiCo's release says 'hundreds of pickup and drop-off locations' and does not give a count; it also does not say whether a safety observer rides in the cab on these routes. Gatik's own release of 27 January 2026 states that its driverless trucks 'operate without a driver or safety observer', but names Fortune 50 retailers rather than PepsiCo — so driverless operation for PepsiCo specifically is not established here. Both documents are the companies' own announcements of their own deal.
What this means
Autonomous middle-mile freight is now under a multi-year commercial agreement on fixed routes in three states, though whether PepsiCo's trucks run with no one in the cab is not established. Neither release puts a number on remote supervision, and PepsiCo's does not say whether a safety observer rides in the cab.
What it does not yet show
It does not mean long-haul driving is going. These are mapped middle-mile lanes; the yard manoeuvring, load responsibility and trip exceptions that make up much of a driver's day are not in scope, and neither is any route that has not been surveyed.
What you can check
Ask a freight operator in your region whether any driver-out lane runs where you drive, and what the remote-supervisor-to-truck ratio is on it. If nobody can name a lane, the deployment has not reached you yet.
Does it change the assessment?
No. The impact index is never moved by a single event. Nor did this record change a layer: all 1 linked judgement above already rested on earlier evidence. This one adds to them.
