Where this applies
NAICS 54161, management consulting services, all employees, seasonally adjusted, pulled whole from the BLS public API and the slope computed here. This is an industry series and not an occupation series: it counts everyone on a consulting firm's payroll including its own finance and IT staff, and it cannot see the very large number of people who do consulting work inside a client company or through a personal service company. It also says nothing about fee levels, hours billed, or the mix between partners and juniors — a firm can grow its headcount while the pyramid beneath each partner shrinks, and this series would not show it.
What this means
The task this occupation is most exposed on is the deck, and the industry that sells decks is at its employment high. Both are true, and holding them together is the point: cheaper production has not yet shown up as fewer consultants. The reading that fits both is the one the page already makes — what is at risk is the billing model rather than the advice, and a firm can grow its headcount while the pyramid under each partner changes shape.
What it does not yet show
It cannot see the shape of the pyramid, which is where this occupation's change would show first. A firm that replaces four analysts with one analyst and a model, then hires five more consultants into implementation work, appears in this series as growth. It also says nothing about fee levels or hours billed, and those are the numbers a partner watches.
What you can check
Ask your own firm how many people sat between a partner and the client on your last three engagements, and compare it with three years ago. That ratio is the thing this series cannot show and the thing that decides your career.
Does it change the assessment?
No. The impact index is never moved by a single event. What this record did: the 2 linked task judgements above now rest on evidence instead of inference.
