Where this applies
United States payroll employment in long-distance truckload carriers — the segment that autonomous trucking targets first, and deliberately narrower than 'trucking', which includes local delivery and specialised haulage that no driverless programme is aimed at. Read the dates before reading the fall: the peak is August 2022, three months before ChatGPT was released and years before any driverless truck carried freight without a person in the cab at scale, and the whole decline tracks the freight downturn that followed the pandemic shipping boom. This series cannot attribute the fall to anything, and the most-supported explanation in it is a demand cycle, not automation. Owner-operators, who are a large part of this segment, are not payroll employees and are not counted. Seasonally adjusted, monthly, in thousands; recent months preliminary.
What this means
The most-cited employment fact about long-haul trucking has a date on it, and the date does not fit the story it is usually told in support of. Employment in the exact segment driverless freight targets peaked three months before ChatGPT and has fallen with the freight cycle ever since. Anyone arguing from this number in either direction has to deal with August 2022.
What it does not yet show
It does not show automation having no effect — a cycle and a technology can pull the same line down together, and this series cannot tell them apart. It also does not cover owner-operators, who are a large share of this segment and would be the first to leave when rates fall. What it establishes is narrower and more useful: the fall began before the technology could have caused it, so the fall is not evidence for the technology.
What you can check
Look up spot freight rates over the same months and lay the two lines beside each other. If they move together, you have found what this series is mostly measuring — and you will know what to ask the next time a headline uses this number.
Does it change the assessment?
No. The impact index is never moved by a single event. Nor did this record change a layer: all 1 linked judgement above already rested on earlier evidence. This one adds to them.
