The US truck safety regulator let driverless trucks use cab-mounted warning beacons instead of a driver placing warning triangles after a breakdown, after Aurora ran 34 such trucks over 500,000 miles

DeploymentAn employer has put it into production. Can move the baseline — weighted by scale and how similar the setting is.
Tasks this bears on
Handling the trip going wrong
Breakdowns, closures, weather, a receiver who will not accept, a gate that is locked.
Still human-led✓ Evidence-backed
Where this applies
United States. The regulator grants a five-year exemption, effective 7 October 2026, letting Aurora and other carriers running Level 4 automated trucks use cab-mounted warning beacons in lieu of the warning devices that federal rules otherwise require the driver to place when a truck stops on the road or shoulder; Aurora reports using the beacons under a waiver from October 2025 to January 2026 on 34 trucks that travelled over 500,000 miles. Operations that would need hazardous-materials, passenger or triple-trailer endorsements are excluded. It removes one roadside step of handling a breakdown; recovery, closures, receivers and locked gates are not addressed.
What this means
One roadside part of handling a breakdown no longer needs a person on driverless trucks.
What it does not yet show
One step of a breakdown, for one class of trucks; the rest of the trip going wrong is untouched.
What you can check
Open Federal Register notice 2026-20734 and find "cab-mounted warning beacons in lieu of traditional warning devices".
Does it change the assessment?
No. The impact index is never moved by a single event. Nor did this record change a layer: all 1 linked judgement above already rested on earlier evidence. This one adds to them.
